Frequently Asked Questions

Learn more about how the Morning Pages app works.

What is Morning Pages?

Morning Pages is a private journaling app that allows you to write the things running through your mind using iPhone or iPad. We're using artificial intelligence to help you track your mood, emotions, and topics that your writing is associated with. Writing your ramblings helps you create a deeper self-awareness and a mindset of clarity. Call it morning writing sessions, a substitution for meditation, creativity recovery tool or therapy.

Does it cost any money to use Morning Pages?

No. The app is completely free.

How can I make sure that my writing stays private?

The app doesn't require registration to use it. This means we don't have access to your pages, neither do we know who you are. If you share your phone with someone else, and want to make sure they don't see your words, you can use our "Lock Screen" feature. The lock option is located in Settings → Lock Screen. To unlock the app you will need to enter your secret password or use Touch ID.

How do statistics work?

Statistics are designed to help you better understand your feelings towards people or situations based on your writing. We've got three types of stats that you can pay attention to. They are emotions, mood, and topics. Everytime you write a Morning Page, you can go to "Statistics" at the bottom of the screen, and check out what emotions are prevailing in your writing, what mood you're in according to what you write, and what key concepts or topics are expressed in your pages. Your emotions will be displayed at the top half of the screen. Sometimes you may get just one emotion displayed there. Other times you will see two or three emotions. But there can never be more than five emotions displayed at a time. Topics will be displayed together with emotions. They are circled words representing concepts with which your text is associated. These words aren't necessarily mentioned in your text. Your mood chart will appear at the bottom half of the screen. There can be three types of moods displayed there: positive, negative, and neutral. To see your statistics for the previous days, just swipe left. To see your weekly stats, jump to the "Week" tab at the top bar. Swipe left if you want to check out stats for the previous week. To check out your monthly stats, go to the "Month" tab at the top bar. To see the stats for the previous month, you guessed it, swipe left. Statistics work best for pages that have 500 words or more.

How do you analyze my emotions?

We're using IBM Watson Natural Language Understanding service that enables emotion analysis for specific keywords and phrases detected in your text. For example, if you write a sentence "I love apples," the stats will display "joy" as a prevailing emotion in this tiny piece of text. Emotion analysis is available for pages written in English language only. What kind of emotions do you display on the stats page? You can get up to 5 emotions displayed at a time. The types of emotions include: joy, anger, empathy, fear, disgust

How do you analyze my mood?

We're using IBM Watson Natural Language Understanding service to analyze the sentiment in your text. The words in your pages can be positive, negative, or neutral. For example, a sentence "Have a nice day!" is a positive statement. Positive sentiment translates into a good mood, negative sentiment means you're sad or angry, and neutral mood means you're alright. We use green for positive, red for negative, and grey for neutral mood. The Mood Chart supports the following languages: Arabic, English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish.

How do you analyze topics in my writing?

We're using IBM Watson Natural Language Understanding service to identify high-level concepts that aren't necessarily directly referenced in the text. These concepts reveal what topics your writing is associated with. Topics analysis supports English and Spanish languages.

What's IBM Watson?

IBM Watson refers to those scary things from futuristic movies that have come true. Joking. But behind every joke there is a grain of truth! IBM Watson is a system that can think like humans and understand us better than we ourselves can. It uses a mixture of different techniques such as machine learning, natural language processing, artificial intelligence to give us answers to our questions. We at Morning Pages are using some of Watson's services to provide insights to your emotions, mood, and personality, so you could better understand yourself and live a more conscious life.

Why are my stats incomplete?

There can be two reasons why you might be getting a warning sign: 1) you don't write enough words in your Morning Pages. OR 2) the language you use to write Morning Pages isn't supported by our service.

What languages does the stats feature support?

Emotion analysis is available for pages written in English language only. The Mood Chart supports the following languages: Arabic, English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish. Topics analysis supports English and Spanish languages only.

How many words do I need to write to get the most out of my statistics?

Morning Pages creates quality stats only where sufficient number of words of suitable quality is provided. We advise that you write at least 500 words every day. If the app tells you that you don't have enough words in your Morning Page, you can always come back and write more!

How can I make sure my writing stays private?

We don't have access to your pages. All your words are stored on your phone. If you don't want anybody to see what you've written, you can use our "Lock Screen" feature. The lock option is located in Settings → Lock Screen. This lock will require that you enter the secret password whenever you open the app.
